A Visualization Approach to Data Analyzing

header.jpg

The needs.

Data don't lie. Data analyzing is one of the most effective ways to make things better. Designers need to collaborate with data, but in reality, only few likes to play with numbers. There was tons of system within Amazon are about data monitoring and analyzing, actually each system provided part of metrics that designer often use. However, none of these systems can provide a full picture of page performance and connect straight with page looks. It’s too much overhead to let designers walking around these systems. Especially when we need to check page performance  on daily basis during Event days. During my tenure at Amazon as Sr. Production manager, I was determined to create better solutions.

The problems.

1) It’s heavy lifting.

To obtain a full picture of page performance, you need to operate across 3-4 systems. And each system requires a different input follow its format and logic (e.g time), too much overhead for a simple page performance review.

2) Visual is a missing.

The output is pure data without any connection to page looks, you should go back to the system to understand what is the string id referring to and then collage all pieces of data into a page.

3) Degraded user experience in the journey.

Different interactions in each systems make it hard to operate smoothly, some specific data need proactive input but some don’t. Designers should considers all aspects of input before they get a full picture of data.

Key considerations

1) Simple interaction.

The interaction must be very simple and requires little user input.Users must be able to use it without learning.

2)Easy understanding.
The output should be visualized and easy to understand. Everyone could read the performance diagram at a glance.

Following are demos and concepts for a project named Compass, which helps people see and understand their data in a  visualization way.

Simple concept

ou can easily find all input at left dash board and see result in right panel at a glance.

One click

As the name indicates, you don’t need to calculate and re-submit to adapt different format, requesting visualized data only need one-click.

Dynamic view

Animation directly show the data flow so everyone could understand data with ease
